Nine Rivers Distillery is a project that evolved out of Whisky Networking China – monthly events for whisky enthusiasts to meet up, share a few whiskies, and network with like-minded professionals with a passion for whisky.
It started off as one of those end-of-the-evening discussion points where the common question was “why isn’t modern whisky anywhere near as good as the stuff from years ago”. That’s when we all started to pick it all apart, grain by grain, to understand what had changed in the production of whisky, and why.
The whisky fueled “what if” turned into “what if we crafted whisky in a way that put quality, aroma, and flavors before greed and profit – is it even possible to make commercially viable world-class whisky?”
We did enough research to believe it was possible to do this. Too many things to go into right now, but the story, the strategy and the team leading it have built enough confidence in more than 300 whisky loving investors to bring the project to where it is today.
Now we’re in 2024, and we’re just a few months away from producing our first spirit at what will be China’s biggest single malt whisky distillery, with an eventual capacity of 7.5 million LPA. To put that in perspective, if we were in Scotland, with (at my counting) 152 single malt whisky distilleries, we’d rank in at about number 6 or number 7. In fact, 80% of the single malt whisky distilleries in Scotland would fit their entire operation into just one of our buildings. On a global scale, we’d rank in the top 20 (at the time of writing this).
Of course, I’m personally involved. It would be impossible not to be!
